1999 - My name is Ieva Gravite Johnsson. I am born in Riga and I have lived at Nyköping in Sweden about 10 years. January 2003 I moved back to Riga. I speak latvian, russian, swedish and english.

The children need contacts - The most necessary for the children is to get in contact with other people through out the world to see that there is another world and you can be happy and successful even if your family has abandoned you and you live at the orphanage.

God mothers and fathers or families wanted - We try to find some God mothers and fathers or families to the children of the orphanage. Some of the children are even sisters and brothers. As the most there is a family of 5 sibilings. The children are learning both English and German at school so the simple communications is possible.

70 children - Today there are about 70 children in the age of 3 to 18. The children come only from the county of Jekabpils. The law of Latvia allows children to live at the orphanage till they reach the age of 18. Afterwards it is the duty of municipality to provide the appartment as well as work to those who come from the orphanage. We have only the experience of one case and that hasn't been so sucsessfull, it means that the child has turned to the same occupation as her mother - drinking and prostituting.

As far as I know there is only one boy who is really a total orhpane. All other children have one parent or both alive but they have lost the right of parenting due to their abuse of alcohol or drugs or that they have commited crime.

Fundraising for a Bus and exchange programmes - I have been engaged in the project Arbetskraft and we have succeeded to raise the money to buy a minibuss so the children don't have to walk to school (it is about 20 km).

The orphanage "Likumi" - "Likumi" previously called "Abelu nams " (the house of apples due to the orcgard) is situated in the East part of Latvia, about 180 km East from Riga, the capital of Latvia. The county is named Jekabpils after the biggest city of the county. "Likumi" lies in the municipality of Selpils which is a small town/village not more than 3.000 inhabitants. Likumi means the curve as the place lies in the curve of river Daugava, the biggest river in Latvia.

Established - The orphange was established in 1940 as the girls college to learn the householding, but after the Second World War the need of orphanages was enormous so the college became the orphanage. During that time there were children who had lost their parents due to the war. The Likumi (as we call it) has been working since then and even today in the free Republic of Latvia it functions as the orphanage.

Humanitarian aid - I have been working through the organisation "Arbetskraft" for 5 years to give humanitarian aid of different kind to the orphanage Likumi. We have sent clothes, shoes, furniture, household articles as well as a pic-up Volvo and the tractor as Likumi has their own land and woods. We used to visit the orphanage at least once a year during the period Arbetskraft was a financed project. There are still some members working volontarily in Sweden.
